History Department
Departmental Integration of Faith and Learning
- The professors purport that God’s purpose for humankind is timeless and the results of obedience and disobedience to His will are the same in the past as in the present. Thus, all must learn from the past in order to live in the present with meaning and ponder the future with confidence. From this presupposition, all professors integrate their teaching on an individual basis. The students are challenged to understand the facts of the past as relevant to the world today in order to function as a responsible world Christian and citizen.
- Senior Composition Component-Integrating Faith and History
- The department offers specific courses: American Religious History and European Religious History.
- Targeted Reading- Hughes, Marsden
Aspects of Curriculum
- Archival and museum science preparation: The university archives in the Zondervan Library serve as a challenging laboratory on the leading edge of archival science for students.
- A non-western, cross-cultural emphasis: The department offers separate courses in History and Geography of Latin America, East Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa, Modern Middle East, Greek and Roman History and Russian Civilization.
- Breadth in curriculum and faculty strengths: Taylor offers a course from every time period and of every major region. The faculty possess diverse teaching interests.
- History helps one understand people. A history undergraduate degree matched with a graduate technical degree is an unbeatable combination (i.e., ministry, personnel, law, etc.).
