As there are a plethora of business-related web sites out there, we have selected for inclusion on this page a list of "Librarian Approved" sites useful for research purposes. If you are aware of any that we have overlooked, please send in your suggestions via the Ask-A-Librarian email form.

  • Business Ethics
    Created by a MLS- and MBA-credentialed Sharon Stoerger, this site presents links to many different documents, sites, and publications dealing with Business Ethics. Categories include: articles and publications, case studies, corporate codes of ethics, professional organizations and associations, and resources and centers. Presents a variety of nonprofit and organizational sites including governmental, agency, educational, and corporate. Most links have a brief description to guide users to relevant information.

  • Business and Human Rights Resource Centre
    Offers easily accessible information on the exploitive practices of businesses worldwide. Search by company name, human rights issue, country, or general topic. They attempt to give balanced coverage.
  • BusinessDictionary.com
    Great tool for quick Business term reference. Covers 20,000 terms and offers a 42-category business term search for easy subject access.
  • Country Commercial Guides
    From the Market Research home page on the Export.gov site, the Country commercial guides are accessible through the Market Research Library - linked in the middle of the second paragraph. When the search screen for the library loads, choose Country Commercial Guide located in the drop-down menu next to Report type. This will present current data. For older CCG's, check the box next to Include Archived records at the bottom of the search area.

  • Doing Business
    A database that provides objective measures of business regulations and their enforcement, the Doing Business indicators are comparable across 175 economies. They indicate the regulatory costs of business and can be used to analyze specific regulations that enhance or constrain investment, productivity, and growth.

  • Emergence of Advertising in America: 1850-1920
    EAA holds a unique collection of elements from the history of advertising. Offers an interesting perspective of American cultuer and the advertising industry for this period. Is a companion site to Duke University's Ad* Access, which contains ads in newspapers and magazines from 1911-1955. Features of the EAA site include a time line of events from 1841-1920, bibliographies, and various search features including keyword, illustrations, and coupons, contests, and testimonials. You can also search by famous person featured in an ad.

  • Food Marketing Institute
    Food Marketing Institute (FMI) conducts programs in research, e ducation, industry relations and public affairs on behalf of its 1,500 member companies - food retailers and wholesalers - in the United States and around the world. Provides research reports, information on training and certification, consumer information, lobbying updates, and industry news and advice. A good site for news, current issues, statistics, and consumer information relevant to the food industry.

  • globalEDGE
    Created by the Center for International Business Education and Research out of Michigan State University, this site organizes and annotates over 5,000 business and country-specific web sites. Allows users to assess and compare country investment climates, and resources are accessible by region, country, and topic. Special features are available for those who register (which is free!). Sections of the site include News & Views, Industry Profiles, Country Insights, Resource Desk, and the Academy.

  • MarketResearch.com
    MarketResearch.com is the world's largest and continuously updated collection of market research. They offer more than 110,000 market research reports from over 550 leading global publishers.

  • Business.gov
    The federal government is attempting to make finding information about business a bit easier with this website, and they have certainly succeeded. Business.gov is managed by the U.S. Small Business Administration, which is working in partnership with 21 other federal agencies. Along the top of the homepage, visitors will find sections that include "Small Business Guides", "State and Local Info", and "Government Forms". In the "Small Business Guides" area, visitors can read over topical guides that address everything from e-commerce to occupational safety and health. The "State and Local Info" section allows users to click on an interactive map to find state and local regulations that pertain to businesses. Finally, the "Government Forms" area contains links to frequently requested forms, such as the I-9, the SS-4, and the W-2. Visitors should also check out the "Spotlight" area which features information on free tax training, managing small business credit, and an assessment tool for new businesses.

Economics

  • Big Charts
    The world's most comprehensive and easy-to-use investment research Web site, providing access to professional-level research tools such as interactive charts, quotes, industry analysis and intraday stock screeners, as well as market news and commentary. It is free because of site sponsors, meaning advertising is abundant, however it is extremely useful and tracks more than 50,000 stocks on major exchanges, providing charting for Hi/Lo/Close, price change, and volume data for one year.

  • Bureau of Economic Analysis
    BEA produces economic accounts statistics that enable government and business decision-makers, researchers, and the American public to follow and understand the performance of the Nation's economy. To do this, BEA collects source data, conducts research and analysis, develops and implements estimation methodologies, and disseminates statistics to the public. BEA's economic statistics, which provide a comprehensive, up-to-date picture of the U.S. economy, are key ingredients in critical decisions affecting monetary policy, tax and budget projections, and business investment plans. The cornerstone of BEA's statistics is the national income and product accounts (NIPAs), which feature the estimates of gross domestic product (GDP) and related measures.

  • The Conference Board
    Best known for the Consumer Confidence Index and the Leading Economic Indicators, The Conference Board has, for over 90 years, equipped the world's leading corporations with practical knowledge through issues-oriented research. The site provides current economic trends, as well as some analysis and forecasts, survey results and top-level numbers on GDP, inflation, consumer spending, 90-day treasury bills, and 10-year gov't bonds.

  • Finance Resources on the Web
    Professor Ian Giddy from NYU Stern, has created this portal for finance web sites. He's divided the links into several main categories: General Finance & the Economy, Financial Markets, Company, Fund, & Investment Research, Corporate Finance, Risk Management, International Finance, Newspapers & Magazines, Government Resources, and Online Learning.

  • International Monetary Fund
    The IMF is an organization of 185 countries working to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty. While this site provides a plethora of resources, be sure to specifically check out the Publications, as well as, Data and Statistics pages.

  • The Library of Economics and Liberty
    Provides a variety of free, online content including an Encyclopedia of Economics, books and journal articles by, about and for economists, as well as some data and statistical sources. See the About section of this site to learn more and get an overview of all of the features.

  • RePEc: Research Papers in Economics
    RePEc is a collaborative effort of hundreds of volunteers in 58 countries and 35 US states to enhance the dissemination of research in economics. The heart of the project is a decentralized database of working papers, journal articles and software components. All RePEc material is freely available. Working papers and articles that are freely available will say [Downloadable] next to the citation information.

  • Resources for Economists on the Internet
    This portal lists more than 2,000 resources in 97 sections and sub-sections available on the Internet of interest to academic and practicing economists, and those interested in economics. Almost all resources are also described. Also, when searching the web for economic information, try using the Economics Search Engine, linked from the main RFE page.

  • World Bank
    The World Bank is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world. Be sure to check out the Data & Research and Publications sections

Statistical Sources

  • Fedstats.gov
    FedStats provides easy access to statistics and information produced by more than 100 US Federal Government agencies. You can even find statistical information about Grant County.

  • Census.gov
    Provides electronic, searchable access to the 2000 Census data. Provides a link to the American FactFinder which is the "source for population, housing, economic, and geographic data".

  • DataPlace
    To find quick stats on people, places, and general populations, check out this web site. Offers maps, data charts, area overviews, fun facts, and rankings. Contains data from the 1990 and 2000 Censuses (demographic, economic, housing, and social characteristics), Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (home mortgage applications and loans), Section 8 Expiring Use database (neighborhood- and property-level data on federally assisted housing at risk of loss), and Consolidated Plan special tabulations (data on housing needs by household income level).

  • The World Factbook (CIA)
    A vast collection of country information from around the world, the CIA Factbook is a credible web source for statistical, geographic, political, and a plethora of other details on specific nations around the world. It is updated throughout the year.

  • CountryWatch
    A database that Zondervan subscribes to, CountryWatch provides up-to-date news and information on each of the recognized countries of the world in various formats - reports, reviews, maps, graphs, data, etc.
