What's New in the Library: Encyclopedia of Philosophy

10.30.2006

Did you know that the library adds around 4,000 new items to the collection every year? Materials are chosen using guidelines of the Collection Development Policy which, among other things, suggests that materials are purchased or accepted as gifts for the library if they support specific courses in the curriculum or are of a general, cultural, or religious nature relevant to the research and/or personal needs of the campus community.

One significant purchase that has been made this year is the second edition of the Encyclopedia of Philosophy (Ref. 103 En19B .) This encyclopedia, issued 40 years after the original, is a well-respected source for information about philosophies and philosophers. While no source can cover a topic completely, the 10 volumes of the Encyclopedia of Philosophy provide broad coverage that includes 90 new articles and a significant percentage of updates to articles that were published in the first edition. When you need introductory information about a philosophy or philosopher, take a walk to the reference collection and try it out.
