New Search Tools from Google
09.08.2006
We have just added links to Google Scholar and Google Books. The results that you get from these specialized Google searches are more scholarly than what you turn up in a general Google search. Google Scholar gleans many "peer-reviewed" periodical and research studies. Results often link directly to full-text. Here's a JSTOR tip: by adding "jstor" after the term(s) you enter, your results are limited to full-text articles from over 600 periodicals available in the database archives JSTOR.
Google Books does several things. First it searches the full text of books that Google has digitized, some of which you can only view a few "text-searched" pages. This can be a useful means for discovering books (or essays and chapters within books) that are relevant to your topic. Although it doesn't replace keyword and subject searching in the Taylor catalog and WorldCat, Google Books is a good way to expand your search. Google Books also provides access to "Open WorldCat" to help you locate items by zipcode when you are away from Taylor. To find "Open WorldCat" choose "Library catalogs" in Advanced Book Search. For the best results, however, you'll still want to use Taylor's subscription access to WorldCat because here you can initiate interlibrary loan requests easily and efficiently.
Finally, Google Books now provides some books that you can read online in their entirety. To limit a Google book search to what's available for full-text perusal, select the option under Search: "Full view books". As an added bonus, some of these books are available for downloading.
