"The challenges of the Taylor English major cultivated my skills in writing, critical thinking, close reading and literary argumentation. Such a rigorous course of study thoroughly equipped me for doctoral work in English, adjunct teaching at several universities and now a prospective career in the publishing industry." - Valerie Shaner Johnson, TU 1994
"Participating in Taylor's English department provided me with an invaluable theoretical foundation and developed my critical skills to be competitive in an increasingly stringent graduate school market. I benefited from both survey and non-canonical studies." - Mary Alice Kirkpatrick, TU 2000
"The English department prepared me very well to become an English teacher. The professors have expertise in many areas and periods of literature, and demonstrate enthusiasm. I value the relationships each strove to establish with English majors. Professors were always available to help with papers, references or just to talk. The strong reputations of Taylor's English and education departments allowed me to choose between job offers before graduation." - Samantha Schley, TU 2001
"One of my greatest delights is to explore human nature, and the literature courses at Taylor University provided me with that opportunity. Literature is a window into our humanness. Under the teaching and guidance of knowledgeable and accessible professors, I was challenged to sit and wrestle with the texts and was compelled to dig deep within my own human nature in search of answers. The results were joyous and enriching. They initiated the deeper inner growth - intellectual and spiritual - that I would yet undergo." - Jen Hao Chen, TU 2001, secondary education major, Student Teacher of the Year
